WVU gets Big 12 baseball honors

West Virginia just claimed some big-time awards, with Randy Mazey named Big 12 Coach of the Year and Alek Manoah named the league’s Pitcher of the Year.

Now, the Mountaineers are looking for a team honor.

Fourth-seeded West Virginia (34-18) opens play in the Big 12 Tournament against No. 5 seed Kansas (31-24) Wednesday at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City.

The Mountaineers think they can claim their first Big 12 title on Sunday, and Manoah is one of the main reasons. The 6-6, 260-pound right-hander had a 1.91 ERA and struck out 125 in 14 games.

“It’s just his commitment, his competitiveness, his desire – all the synonyms that go along with winning, he’s got them,” Mazey said. “He’s a special talent with the pitches he throws on top of it. You combine all that stuff together, and that’s why you have the pitcher of the year.”

Mazey earned the coaching award after leading West Virginia to its best conference finish since 2013.

“It’s awesome,” he said. “What an award because it’s voted on by your peers. When you get an award like that, it means all that much more, you know. Special award. Most of the group I’m coaching amongst – to even think that it was even possible is beyond belief to me.”

Cal’s means in D-II track championships

California University senior Jae’Len Means will be competing at the 2019 NCAA Division II Championships on Friday and Saturday at Javelina Stadium in Kingsville, Texas.

Means will be making his fourth career appearance at the NCAA Championships and will be competing in the 200-meter dash. He broke the all-time PSAC record in the 200 meters at Duke this spring with a blistering time of 21.01 seconds, eclipsing the previous league mark held since 1991. Two weeks ago, Means repeated as the PSAC champion in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes to finish his career with 10 conference titles (eight individual).

Means is seeded 22nd in a field of 24.

F1 great Lauda dies

Formula One great Niki Lauda, who won two of his world titles after a horrific crash that left him with serious burns and went on to become a prominent figure in the aviation industry, has died. He was 70.

Lauda’s family issued a statement saying the three-time world champion “passed away peacefully” on Monday, the Austria Press Agency reported.

Lauda won the F1 drivers’ championship in 1975 and 1977 with Ferrari and again in 1984 with McLaren.

In 1976, he was badly burned when he crashed during the German Grand Prix, but he made an astonishingly fast return to racing just six weeks later.
