One inning costly to Wild Things
FLORENCE, Ky. – Florence scored all of its runs during a four-batter stretch of the fifth inning and defeated the free-falling Wild Things 6-2 Wednesday night.
Florence began the night a half-game behind first-place Evansville in the Frontier League’s tight West Division, where the top four teams were separated by only three games. The Wild Things have lost eight of nine.
Washington took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI single by Drew Bene.
Austin Wobrock gave Florence a 2-1 lead in the fifth with a two-run double. Connor Crane, the No. 9 hitter in the Freedom’s lineup, followed with a two-run homer, his 10th fo the season, and two batters later Ricky Ramirez hit another two-run homer off Washington starter Nick Wegmann (6-7).
Stephen Lohr hit a solo home run in the ninth inning for Washington, which outhit Florence, 9-8.
Florence starter Mike Castellani (8-2) gave up eight hits and one unearned run over seven innings.
Washington relievers James Meeker and Zach Reid combined for three shutout innings, allowing one hit.
