Washington resident Gene Steratore will be the referee heading the Super Bowl LII officiating team Feb. 4 at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.

The assignments were given to the crew Wednesday. This will be Steratore’s first Super Bowl assignment. He was the alternate referee for the 2010 Super Bowl.

Steratore officiated the NFC Divisional Playoff game Sunday between the New Orleans Saints and Minnesota Vikings, which included a wild finish in which Minnesota scored the winning touchdown on the game’s final play.

Steratore is also a Division I college basketball official with the Big Ten as his primary conference.

According to the website footballzebras.com, officials in the Super Bowl must be ranked in the top tier as determined by the new senior vice-president of officiating, Al Riveron. Accuracy percentages are a large part of the ranking scheme, but there are other factors Riveron considers.

Steratore, 54, is in his 15th season as an NFL official and 12th as a referee. He entered the league in 2003 as a field judge and was promoted to referee in 2006. This is his 12th postseason assignment, including six divisional playoffs and two conference championships.

Steratore co-owns Steratore Sanitary Supply, a janitorial supply company, with his brother, Tony, who is the back judge for the AFC championship game this weekend. Tony Steratore is a McMurray resident and has officiated two Super Bowls.

The other members of the Super Bowl LII officiating crew are Roy Ellison (umpire), Jerry Bergman (down judge), Byron Boston (line judge), Tom Hill (field judge), Scott Edwards (side judge) and Perry Paganelli (back judge). The crew has 127 years of NFL officiating experience and 101 combined playoff game assignments.
