ELLSWORTH – Seth Adams threw two touchdown passes in the first four minutes of Bentworth’s 26-point second quarter, Owen Petrisek had three touchdown runs and Trevor Richardson booted two field goals as the Bearcats defeated Avella 41-31 Thursday night in a Class A Tri-County South Conference football game.
The win was Bentworth’s second and a row and evened its record at 3-3, both in the conference and overall. It also clinched playoff berths from the TCS for both Carmichaels and California. Avella falls to 4-2, 4-2.
Avella led 7-3 after one quarter but it was all Bentworth for the rest of the first half. Adams threw a 41-yard screen pass to Trent Cavanaugh for a touchdown and an 8-yard scoring strike to Caleb Peternel that gave the Bearcats a 17-7 lead.
Adams completed 14 of 22 passes for 168 yards.
Bentworth tacked on a safety, Petrisek scored on a 25-yard run and Richardson kicked a 37-yard field goal with 33 seconds left in the half to make it 29-7. Richardson opened the scoring with a 24-yard field goal.
Avella managed to pull to within two scores in the second half. Noah Markle had TD runs of five and one yards, Tanner Terensky caught scoring passes of 80 and 13 yards. Matt Kidwell had a 35-yard scoring catch for the eagles, who were plagued by seven turnovers.
Petrisek had TD runs of 14 and four yards in the second half for the Bearcats’ lone scores after the big second quarter. Petrisek finished with 132 yards on 27 carries.
