Boys soccer roundup: Gabelhart’s OT goal keeps Peters Township undefeated

 

Bryce Gabelhart fired a rebound into the net with 3:18 remaining in the first overtime Tuesday night to give undefeated Peters Township a 2-1 victory over host Canon-McMillan in a Section 2-AAAA match.

Peters Township (9-0, 12-0-1), which has already clinched the section title, took a 1-0 lead in the first half when Kyle McFerran scored off a corner Gabelhart had an assist.

Canon-McMillan (5-5, 8-5) tied the score at 1-1 with less than two minutes remaining in the first half when Brandon Byer scored off a cross from Nino Civitate.

The match remained tie until Gabelhart scored the game-winner while the C-M goalkeeper was down on the play.

• Gavin Benson and Blake Brewer combined for six goals and led Waynesburg to a 9-0 rout over visiting Yough in Section 3-AA.

Benson scored three goals, Brewer also had three tallies and Jack Church had a goal and four assists for the Raiders, who improved to 9-2 in section and 10-4 overall.

Will Behm and Tyler Switalski had the other goals for Waynesburg, which can earn a share of the section title with Charleroi if the Raiders win Thursday at Brownsville.

Charleroi is assured of at least a share of the section title after edging Brownsville 1-0. The Cougars scored on a second-half goal by Cullin Woytovich, who fired a shot into the net from 30 yards after rebounding his own direct kick.

• Section 4-A leader Seton-La Salle scored two first-half goals and edged visiting Bentworth, 2-1.

Kellen Krebs and Darryl Daniels scored for Seton-La Salle (11-1-1, 14-1-1), which has a pair of one-goal wins over the Bearcats.

Bentworth closed to within 2-01 when Wyatt Selviski scored in the second half. Goalkeeper Austin Curry had nine saves as Bentworth fell to 9-4 in section and 11-5 overall.

• Led by a five-goal performance Markello Apodiakos, Belle Vernon rolled to a 9-2 victory over Albert Gallatin in Section 3-AAA.

The five goals tied the Belle Vernon single-game record. Apodiakos has 31 goals for the season, which also ties the school single-season record.

Apodiakos and Aaron Brown each scored two goals to help Belle Vernon (7-2-1, 11-3-1) forge a 4-1 halftime lead. Brown finished with a hat trick, notching his third goal during the second half. Nick Nagy also scored for the Leopards.

• Dylan Ferguson scored off a rebound only 2:22 into overtime to give Beth-Center a 1-0 victory over visiting California in Section 4-A.

Beth-Center improved to 4-9 in section and 4-10-1 overall.

•Tom Dzaeovsky made 11 saves as Chartiers-Houston defeated Brentwood 2-1 in a Section 4-A match.

Austin Arnold and Matt Bucha each scored for C-H (8-5, 9-7).
