High school roundup: Ryan paces California to OT win

Cochise Ryan scored 8 of his 16 points in overtime to propel California past Chartiers-Houston in a Section 2 game in Class 2A.

California (6-2, 11-3) has won six in a row. Malik Ramsey scored a game-high 23 points.

Evan Simpson’s tip-in at the buzzer sent the game to overtime. He finished with 12 points for the Bucs (3-4, 8-8).

Laurel 72, Burgettstown 64: Laurel sank all 12 free throws in the fourth quarter for a 72-64 win over Burgettstown in a Section 3 game in Class 2A.

Laurel (3-5, 4-10) sank 28 of 30 free throws in the game. Burgettstown (1-6, 7-9) hit 12 of 14.

Luke Barker scored 23 points and Sam Haswell 20 for the Spartans.

Scott Ferris tossed in 19 points and Dylan Poirier added 16 for the Blue Devils.

Bethel Park 71, Canon-McMillan 50: Bethel Park outscored Canon-McMillan in each quarter for a 71-50 victory in a Section 2 game in Class 6A.

Tom DiRenzo led BP (1-5, 10-6) with 18 points.

Luke Palma scored 18 points and Ethan Beachy and Tom Samosky 10 apiece for C-M (3-3, 9-6).

Bishop Canevin 84, Mapletown 29: Dahue Montgomery scored 21 points to help Bishop Canevin to an 84-29 victory over Mapletown.

Max Vanata led the Maples (1-7, 1-15) with 9 points.

Serra 81, Carmichaels 43: Jimmy Moon poured in a game-high 30 points to lead Serra Catholic to an 81-43 victory over Carmichaels in a Section 2 game in Class 2A.

Jayden Bristol and Khalil Smith scored 12 points apiece for Serra (8-0, 12-2).

Carmichaels (2-6, 8-8) was paced by Al Cree’s 11 points and Matt Barrish’s 10 points.

Fort Cherry 50, Avonworth 41: A 14-4 run in the second quarter made the difference in Fort Cherry’s 50-41 victory over Avonworth in a Section 2 game in Class 3A.

Zach Vincenti had a double-double, 14 points and 10 rebounds, for Fort Cherry (0-8, 3-12). Maddox Truschel chipped in 12 points.

Deon Thomas scored 15 points for Avonworth (5-4, 11-6).

Geibel 65, West Greene 60: Three players scored in double figures to pull Geibel past West Greene 65-60 in a Section 2-A game.

Enzo Fetsko scored 19 points, Cole Kendall 17 and Isiah Krinzer 14 for Geibel, which is 5-3 in the section.

Nathan Brudnock scored 16, Austin Crous 15 and Ben Jackson 14 for West Greene (3-5, 5-9).

McGuffey 55, Frazier 47: C.J. Cole and Colin Walters combined for 37 points as McGuffey clinched a playoff berth for the fourth time in school history with a 55-47 victory over Frazier in Class 3A Section 4.

Cole finished with 21 points and grabbed 15 rebounds. Walters had 16 points and five assists for the Highlanders, who started the game on a 14-0 run. McGuffey (6-2, 11-6) led 16-2 after the first quarter.

Luke Santo led Frazier (2-6, 4-12) with 14 points. Justin Novak and Elijah Santoro had 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Ringgold 59, Elizabeth Forward 45: Luke Wyvratt scored 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds as Ringgold defeated Elizabeth Forward, 59-45, in a Class 4A Section 3 game.

Ringgold (5-1, 12-3) led 16-10 after the first quarter and 36-24 at the half. Chris Peccon scored 13 points for the Rams. Demetrius Butler added 12 points.

Chase Whatton led Elizabeth Forward (1-5, 5-12) with 14 points, which Chase Vaughn added 13.

Monessen 89, Jefferson-Morgan 57: Devin Whitlock, Marquell Smith and Darnel Howell each scored 16 points as Monessen used its high-powered offense to defeat Jefferson-Morgan, 89-57, in a Class A Section 2 game.

Five players scored in double figures for Monessen (7-0, 8-6), the others being Antwon Tucker and Carleton Jones each with 10 points.

Jefferson-Morgan’s Devin Stoneking led all scorers with 28 points. The Rockets fall to 2-6 in the section and 3-13 overall.

Montour 59, Trinity 53: James Eubanks led all scorers with 22 points as Montour outlasted Class 5A Section 2 foe Trinity in overtime, 59-53.

Trinity’s Dylan King sent the game to overtime with a tip-in at the fourth-quarter buzzer to tie the game, 48-48. King had 20 points and 11 rebounds for the Hillers.

Michael Koroly added 13 points for Trinity (4-4, 7-8).

Montour’s Jaden Nelson, who played at Trinity before transferring to play for the Spartans, finished with 12 points. Anthony Tambellini also scored 12 for Montour (6-3, 9-7).

Avella 83, Aquinas Academy 72: Four players for Avella scored in double figures as the Eagles ended a four-game losing streak by defeating Aquinas Academy in a non-section game, 83-72.

Trailing by two points at halftime, 38-36, Avella (3-5, 5-11) outscored Aquinas 47-34 in the second half.

Owen English led the Eagles with 28 points. Tyler Cerciello scored 13, Brandon Samol finished with 12 and Gabe Lis added 11.

Aquinas’ Ian Palmer led all scorers with 30 points.

Chartiers Valley 52, South Fayette: A strong defensive effort from Chartiers Valley limited South Fayette to three points in the first quarter and won 52-35 in a Class 5A Section 2 game.

Jumping out to an 18-3 lead after the opening eight minutes, Chartiers Valley (7-2, 11-3) won its third straight game behind the scoring of Griffin Beattie and Jared Goldstrom. Beattie finished with a game-high 16 points, while Goldstrom chipped in 10.

South Fayette, which has lost three consecutive games, falls to 3-6 in the section and 7-8 overall.

Belle Vernon 75, Waynesburg 65: Drawing even with Belle Vernon in the second quarter, and outscoring the Leopards in the third and fourth, Waynesburg couldn’t overcome a slow start in a 75-65 loss to its Class 4A Section 3 foe.

Belle Vernon (2-4, 5-12) outscored the Raiders 22-10 in the first quarter and rode that lead to the final buzzer.

Four players, led by Larry Callaway’s 21 points, scored in double figures for the Leopards. Cam Nusser scored 19, Mitchell Pohlot 14 and Hunter Ruokonen finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Lucas Garber, the lone scorer in double-digits for Waynesburg (1-5, 8-8), had 25 points.

Upper St. Clair 58, Peters Township 45: Flexing its muscles from the start, Upper St. Clair took an early lead and never looked back to defeat Peters Township 58-45 in a Class 6A Section 2 game.

Upper St. Clair (5-1, 16-1) outscored the Indians 16-6 in the first quarter and led 29-17 at halftime.

Luke and Tanner Gensler led four Panthers to score in double figures with 15 and 11 points, respectively. Andrew Casey and Chris Pantellis both added 10 points.

Peters Township (2-4, 10-5) was paced by Sam Petrarca and Thomas Melonja, both finishing with 13 points.

Brentwood 71, Bentworth 33: CJ Ziegler made five-three pointers and scored a game-high 21 points as Brentwood defeated Bentworth, 71-33, in a Class 2A Section 2 game.

Ziegler helped Brentwood (4-4, 8-7) take a 31-8 lead after the first quarter. Zach Keib scored 13 points for the Spartans.

Shawn Dziak led Bentworth (0-8, 0-15) with 13 points.

Girls results

Beth-Center 41, Waynesburg 30: Beth-Center pounced on a slow start from Waynesburg to down the Raiders, 41-30, in a Class 3A Section 2 game.

A solid defensive effort from Beth-Center (6-3, 10-5) limited the Raiders to seven first-half points and led 21-7 at the half.

Elizabeth Trump led the Bulldogs with 12 points.

CP Miller scored 7 points for Waynesburg (1-8, 5-11).

West Greene 65, California 8: Kaitlyn Rizor scored a game-high 20 points as West Greene dominated from the start to defeat California, 65-8, in a Class A Section 2 game.

West Greene (8-0, 14-1) led 32-3 after the first quarter and 53-3 at halftime. Madison Lampe scored 13 points and McKenna Lampe added 12 for the Pioneers.

California falls to 5-3 in the section and 7-7 overall.

Avella 52, Bentworth 12: Eleven different players scored for Avella as the Eagles downed Bentworth, 52-12, in a non-section game.

Avella (10-4) led 34-4 at the half, limiting the Bearcats to two points in the first and second quarters.

Breanna Jenkins led the Eagles with eight points.

Jocelyn Timlin scored 10 of the 12 points for Bentworth (1-15).

Chartiers-Houston 34, Carmichaels 23: Dominique Mortimer scored 16 points to power Chartiers-Houston to a 34-23 victory over Carmichaels in a Section 2 game in Class 2A.

Zamierah Edwards added 10 points for Chartiers-Houston (4-4, 6-10), which led 17-4 at halftime.

Carmichaels (1-6, 5-12) was paced by Gina Ranieri’s 13 points. Kylie Sinn had 10 points.

Beth-Center 41, Waynesburg 30: A strong first half led Beth-Center to a 41-30 victory over Waynesburg in a Section 3 game in Class 4A.

Anna Sloan scored 15 points and Elizabeth Trump pulled down 13 rebounds for B-C (6-3, 10-5), which led 21-11 at the break

Clare Page Miller contributed 7 points for the Raiders (1-8, 5-11).
