High school notebook: WPIAL track championships might move

2 min read

The WPIAL might be in search of a new host for the track and field championships.

After the decision was made the eliminate the athletic direction position at Baldwin by furloughing Vince Sortino, a 28-year employee of the district, Baldwin put itself in jeopardy of losing the event.

Sortino’s duties are now going to be shared by other employees throughout the district for the 70-plus teams and 26 varsity sports.

In 2017, Baldwin hosted 16 WPIAL basketball playoff games, nine district softball playoff games and the WPIAL volleyball and track and field championships.

SF golfer going to nationals

South Fayette golfer Luke Lestini won the 2018 Tri-State Section Boys Junior PGA Championship Wednesday at Fox Run Golf Course in Beaver Falls.

Lestini, who is entering his junior year at South Fayette, shot a two-day total of 138 (68-70) to win the championship and qualify for the 43rd Boys Junior PGA Championship July 31 to Aug. 3 at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Ky.

The national tournament accepts two players from each of the 41 PGA of America sections, therefore runner-up Palmer Jackson of Franklin Regional also qualified.

Recruiting news

Chartiers-Houston’s Madison Simpson will play volleyball at Washington & Jefferson College.

Simpson, a four-year starter and senior captain, was a first team all-section and all-district selection. She will be a setter for the Presidents.

Simpson also played all four seasons and won a WPIAL title for the C-H girls basketball team.

Breann King, also a volleyball player for the Bucs, will play at Lake Erie College in Ohio.

  • South Fayette lineman Tom Elia earned a pair of offers from Cornell and Richmond. Lions’ kicker Ryan Coe, a first-team all-conference selection for kicking and punting, was offered by Temple.

  • The offers for California running back Jelani Stafford and Washington defensive back Dan Walker Jr. continue to pile up. Stafford, who ran for 1,586 yards and 25 touchdowns as a junior, picked up offers from The Citadel and Notre Dame College in Cleveland. Walker’s numbers added up quickly despite getting a late start after transferring to Washington. In 10 games, he caught 33 passes for 617 yards and nine touchdowns as a wide receiver for the Prexies. Walker added Miami of Ohio and Bowling Green to the list of schools recruiting him.
