Cal offense erupts early, sinks Shippensburg

SHIPPENSBURG – Noah Mitchell went over 1,000 yards passing and the California University defense forced five turnovers in a 57-14 victory over Shippensburg in a PSAC crossover game Saturday afternoon.

It was Cal’s first win in three tries this season and Shippensburg dropped to 2-1.

Mitchell hit Jordan Dandridge with a 16-yard touchdown and Tyson Hill with a 71-yard bomb, and Jimmy Pierce returned an interception 71 yards for another score, as Cal led 20-0 after one quarter.

Nelson Brown, who had 132 yards rushing on 23 carries, scored two of his three touchdowns in the second quarter as Cal led 34-0 at halftime.

Mitchell, who entered the game with the fourth most passing yardage in NCAA Division II, completed 21 of 30 attempts for 325 yards to move his season mark to 1,072 yards. He would also score on a seven-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Dandridge had six receptions for 69 yards and a score and Hill had three catches for 97 yards and a TD. Chad Livingston caught 5 passes for 96 yards.

Cal’s defense held Shippensburg to 321 yards and forced five turnovers. Beside’s Pierce’s TD return, Jermal Martin had two interceptions and Asheed Page-Jones and Lamont McPhatter each had one. McPhatter and Gerald Brown each had a quarterback sack.

Shippensburg quarterback Brycen Mussina, son of former major league pitcher Mike Mussina, completed 19 of 34 attempts for 218 yards and 2 touchdowns. But he threw four of Shippensburg’s five interceptions.
