The California University trio of sophomore Sarah Benson, sophomore Kiandria Cowart and freshman Kaylin Burkey were each selected to the all-tournament team following the conclusion of the Vulcan Invitational on Saturday evening.
The trio helped the Vulcans improve to 5-3 this season after posting a undefeated 4-0 record over the weekend at their home invitational.
Benson paced the team with 9.73 assists per set and added 3.93 digs per set, as she posted an assist/dig double-double in all four matches in the Convocation Center. She started the invitational by matching her season high with 41 assists and totaled 17 digs in a 3-1 victory over Davis & Elkins. Benson then notched 26 assists, 10 digs and three aces in a 3-0 sweep versus Daemen (N.Y.) on Friday night. The following day, the Ohio native recorded 38 assists, 16 digs and two aces in a 3-1 win versus West Liberty before closing the weekend by again matching a season high with 41 assists and adding 16 digs and three aces in a 3-1 victory over Lake Erie (Ohio).
Cowart registered 2.23 points and 1.87 kills per set after appearing in all 15 sets this weekend. She collected seven kills, two digs and two blocks in a 3-1 win against the Senators before totaling six kills on a .312 hitting percentage and adding two digs and three blocks in a 3-0 victory over Daemen (N.Y.). The 5-foot-11 sophomore then recorded a career-high nine kills on a .421 clip with two digs and three blocks in a 3-1 win versus the Hilltoppers. Cowart finished the weekend with six kills and two blocks in a 3-1 victory against the Storm.
Burkey tied for the team lead with 3.83 points and 3.40 kills per set, while adding 4.40 digs per set in four matches played. The true freshman paces the team with five kill/dig double-doubles this season, including three at the home invitational this weekend. Burkey recorded 12 kills and 17 digs in a 3-1 victory over Davis & Elkins before tallying eight kills and 12 digs in a 3-0 win against the Wildcats. The Ohio native then notched 11 kills, 14 digs and two blocks in a 3-1 win versus West Liberty. Burkey closed the weekend with a season-high 20 kills on a .365 hitting percentage and 23 digs in a 3-1 victory over the Storm.
The Washington & Jefferson College women’s golf team put together a fourth-place showing at its season-opening invitational at Grove City on Saturday.
The Presidents posted an 18-hole score of 410 to finish fourth out of seven teams at the event.
Leading the way for the Presidents was sophomore Alexandra Wagner. Wagner carded a 93 to lead W&J and finish tied for 10th in a 51-golfer field.
Junior Emily Figliolia shot a 96 to factor into a four-way tie for 15th.
The freshman duo of Kayla Taninies and Madison Butler rounded out the scorecard for the Presidents with Tanines placing 31st (108) and Butler finishing 35th (113).
