If you have chronic pain, anxiety or other disorders, you likely have tried everything to relieve the day in, day out suffering or stress and have watched with interest as cannabidiol has become legal in certain areas throughout the United States.
CBD hemp oil, is federally legal throughout the United States since the passing of the Farm Bill in 2018, which removed hemp (but not marijuana) from the list of Schedule I drugs, which are drugs without proven medical use that have a potential for abuse. CBD oil products are available without prescription.
“Cannabidiol is extracted from the flowers and buds of hemp plants,” according to WebMD. “It does not produce intoxication; marijuana’s ‘high’ is caused by the chemical tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). In some types of CBD oil, there may be small amounts of THC present, but the right ratio of CBD to THC prevents the psychoactive side effects.”
Research into CBD’s effects is ongoing, and science has only scratched the surface of possible medical benefits. Here are some of the verified health benefits of CBD oil.
Patients with chronic illnesses may find pain relief through carefully controlled dosages of CBD oil. The Journal of Pain Research reports that, in 15 of 18 trials, cannabinoids demonstrated a stronger pain relief effect than the placebo.
“There is evidence that cannabinoids are safe and modestly effective in neuropathic pain and also for relieving pain in patients with malignant diseases,” researchers wrote. “The proportion of ‘responders’ (patients who at the end of two weeks of treatment reported greater than or equal to 30% reduction in pain intensity) . . . was 43% in comparison with placebo (21%).” What makes CBD oil especially attractive if you suffer from chronic pain is that it is non-psychoactive.
Social anxiety disorder treatment
People who have a difficult time in their social lives because of SAD could benefit from CBD oil. The Neuropsychopharmacology journal published research that shows CBD reduces anxiety in both humans and animals. In a small study, participants received either a single dose of CBD or a placebo before participating in a public speaking test.
“Pretreatment with CBD significantly reduced anxiety, cognitive impairment and discomfort in their anticipatory speech,” according to the study.
Treatment for epilepsy
The FDA approved the first CBD prescription drug in June 2018: Epidiolex is an oral medication that treats seizures in two forms of epilepsy, Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome.
These rare and severe syndromes were previously considered difficult, if not impossible, to treat with existing seizure medications.
Other possible treatments
Research into possible CBD oil treatments for patients with additional chronic conditions shows promising results.
Several studies have found that CBD oil can give pain relief to arthritis sufferers and cancer patients and treats insomnia, according to Healthline. Many studies have already found links to pain relief in mice and rats, and additional studies in humans are ongoing.
In the meantime, with few side effects and no risk of developing dependence, CBD oil is a pain relief option that outshines opioid medicines for chronic pain.
