Since 2003, the Southpointe CEO Association has honored an individual, or individuals, with its World Class CEO Award. The award recognizes excellence in profession, achievements in service and dedication to the business development of the Southpointe Technology Park.
Washington County Commissioners Lawrence O. Maggi, Diana Irey Vaughan and Harlan G. Shober Jr. have been named the 2017 World Class CEOs by the Association. This is the 15th year the recognitions have been awarded, and the first-time a female has been among the winners. The three honorees will be recognized at the association’s annual awards dinner on June 21.
The Washington County Board of Commissioners has been instrumental in the development of Southpointe and Southpointe II to create an upscale business park incorporating office buildings, manufacturing facilities, retail, hotels, a golf club, restaurants, fitness centers, education centers and residential units. The Commissioners communicated a vision to create a common sense of purpose among the multiple stakeholders in the Southpointe community, and they continue to focus on the long-term goals of the park. Through collaboration with both public and private entities, Southpointe remains one of the finest business parks in the region and the country.
In addition to honoring World Class CEOs, the association will also award (at that same June 21 event) two, $2,500 scholarships to individuals who are pursuing advanced higher education. Applications are screened by an association committee that reviews materials submitted for evidence of leadership roles, service, ethical behavior, communication style and commitment to learning.
Winners must be employees of an association member organization, or dependents of a person employed by a member organization. If a winner is accepted to, and will be attending Robert Morris University or Waynesburg University (both association member organizations,) he or she will also receive a financial award from that institution. As of press time, the 2017 winners had not yet been selected. New for this year’s awards celebration night is the launch of a special honor, in collaboration with Leadership Washington County, of the Emerging Leader Award. LWC is a leadership development program that strengthens local communities by building business and community leaders and building professional networks. Understanding that participants in the LWC programs are destined to become tomorrow’s CEOs, the Southpointe CEO Association will recognize one individual from the current class from among three candidates who have been selected by their peers.
The 2017 nominees include Carole DeAngelo, marketing director at Observer Publishing Company, Daniel Rooney, general manager of Hyatt Place Pittsburgh South, and Jennifer Trapuzzano, co-owner of Fresh Media Group.
The Southpointe CEO Association advances the interests of businesses and business people located in Southpointe, and promotes Southpointe and Southpointe II throughout the region as a premier place to work, live and play. The 2017 special event honoring World Class CEOs, Academic Scholarship Winners and the Emerging Leader Award will be held June 21 at the Hilton Garden Inn Pittsburgh/Southpointe. It promises to be a showcase for “outstanding leaders in our communities.” More information about the event, sponsorship opportunities, ticket prices and details on reservations will be available on the association website, or by emailing or phoning Urchick as noted below.
