After the chilling temperatures are a long-faded memory, our season will change yet again into the spring and thoughts of long walks through the park, family picnics, birthday parties, graduation parties, weddings, concerts and swimming will be on our minds.
This year we are going to try some new events, like a free “Dive In Movie” to be announced later this summer. Be sure to check it out.
Pavilion rentals are already booking – there was a line at the borough building at 6:30 a.m. on opening day, so if you have an event to plan that includes the park pavilions, book early as dates are quickly being filled. Call the borough for details. There has been no increase in pavilion rentals this year.
We are working on branding the park with a new logo this year “CTP.” Look for it online and wherever park events are held. New artwork is being designed right now soon to be unveiled!
Our grant writing team was successful in seeking funds from the Washington County Local Share Account (LSA). The grant notification of award just came in and we are happy to announce that these funds will be used to build a new pavilion and rehab and replace the pathways throughout the park. Matching funds came from The Friends of the Park, The Canonsburg Borough and Canonsburg Town Park (CTP).
We will continue to apply for grant funding through the available agencies such as Washington County LSA, DCNR and DCED. Playgrounds, pathways and walking trails, parking lots, drainage culverts and tree replacement are all being submitted as part of several grant applications, as well as ADA improvements for accessibility to all. The main water fountain and steps are going to be one of the first projects rehabilitated and plans to renovate the BPW Pavilion are being discussed.
The Canonsburg Pickleball Court should be able to break ground in early spring. Due to the inclement weather in November, this long-awaited project was unfortunately delayed. The three new courts will be a great asset to the park, and will most certainly revitalize the area around the Passante/DeJohn pavilion. The estimated cost of the project is $51,000. The Canonsburg Pickleball family has worked very hard and is excited to gift these courts to the community. We anticipate the project to be completed in early June, followed by an opening ceremony. The group is also planning a Canon-McMillan High School Pickleball tournament this summer and is looking forward to seeing more residents and youth on the courts. The membership is open to residents of all ages. Please email email@example.com for more information on this exciting new addition to our historic park.
As many of you know, we’ve lost a lot of trees over the past several years. We are still working with an arborist to replace the ash trees and older trees throughout the park. While replacing trees with ones that are best suited for our environment, we are also looking to add some color and sound barrier amenities to our project, especially around the basket ball court. Most of the implementation will depend on our successes with the grant awards.
We are planning to implement a “GRAND ENTRANCE” to Town Park with directory boards featuring road maps to the numerous activities and locations throughout the park. We are looking for volunteers to help us with the design and implementation of this huge project. Please contact us if interested in supporting this project.
New Park board members are working to get the word out. Social media and e-newsletters will help secure our park as a regional (50+ acre) asset for all surrounding communities to enjoy.
We are looking to start a volunteer group to help us with gardening and clean up days two to three times a year. If interested, message us on Facebook.
Watch for the activities – concerts, bonfires, 4th of July celebrations, dive in movies and recreation are all on the agenda this year. We are looking forward to a great summer in the park.
