2,000 Turkeys campaign kicks off

Observer-Reporter

With the holidays approaching, it’s a bad time of year to be a turkey, and this bird seems to be heading for a safe hiding place. But it’s a great time of year to help the less fortunate by donating to 2,000 Turkeys.

I ran across an article of iconic Thanksgiving television episodes the other day and, not surprisingly, topping the list is WKRP in Cincinnati’s “Turkeys Away” episode.

In the episode, radio newsman Les Nessman, played by the late Richard Sanders, narrates a turkey drop that goes awry – you should re-watch the show – and utters the classic line, “As God is my witness, I thought turkeys could fly.”

I want to assure you that the 2,000 Turkeys campaign is not like that.

Yes, the campaign involves a radio station, WJPA Radio, and turkeys. But the similarities end there.

2,000 Turkeys is an annual grassroots effort to provide Thanksgiving dinner for Washington County families in need. It has grown into the single largest fundraiser for Greater Washington County Food Bank.

To date, thanks to the generosity of individuals, businesses, organizations and groups, the campaign has raised more than $19,000. Every donation, small and large, is appreciated and gets us closer to reaching our goal of raising $100,000 for the food bank.

The food bank is able to provide a turkey and traditional Thanksgiving side dishes (including a crop of potatoes grown and donated by Trinity Area School District, fresh apples from Simmons Farm and peppers and onions from Duda’s Market) and desserts.

Connie Burd, executive director of the food bank, said the nonprofit also sends boxes of food, including turkeys and hams, to school districts and after-school programs, and other nonprofit agencies who help distribute the food.

This year, the turkeys will be distributed in mid-November at three locations, and the fixings will be distributed at the food bank pantries.

Less than a month remains until Thanksgiving. Your donations will help make another family’s Thanksgiving a happy holiday, and we thank you for that. Please help us reach our goal.

Please mail contributions to 2000 Turkeys, P.O. Box 2000, Washington, Pa., 15301. Or, drop off a donation to WJPA Radio or the Observer-Reporter.
