Washington County has begun advertising for a finance director, and on Friday, Joshua Hatfield confirmed he’s exiting the position he has held since the beginning of 2017.

Hatfield, 34, of Washington, has also worked for the county since 2004 as an analyst and deputy controller.

He declined to indicate where he’s going, saying only he’ll be working for “a nonpublic entity. You could probably identify it as a nonprofit.”

“An opportunity has presented itself, and I’ve decided to take the leap.”

The county’s finance department handles the multi-step preparation of the county’s annual general fund budget, which is $95.3 million this year.

The department also monitors expenses, revenues and investments throughout the year, makes financial projections and handles fiscal reporting for various state and federal grants, participates in audits, and manages investments and debt, including bond issues.

The county is accepting applications through Friday, March 8.

At the commissioners’ meeting Thursday, Chairman Larry Maggi introduced Shelli H. Arnold, who will take over as the county’s new director of human resources on March 1.

A graduate of Waynesburg University, who has a master’s of business administration degree from Marymount University, Arlington, Va., she has been a human resources consultant after holding several positions with the Graduate Management Admission Council in Reston, Va., from 1996 through 2015.
