Trinity Area School Board approved approximately $7.9 million in contracts Thursday for heating and air conditioning system renovations at Trinity East, West and North elementary schools and the middle school.

Directors awarded a contract for HVAC work to AJ Demore & Sons in the amount of $5.2 million.

Also approved was a bid for electrical work to A-1 Electric for approximately $1.5 million.

In addition, the board awarded a contract of $293,000 to John Haughty for plumbing at those schools and hired Salmon Construction for $800,000 to serve as general contractor.

Matt Howard, director of fiscal services, said the district will use a portion of the $5 million Qualified Zone Academy bond funds the school district received through the state Department of Education and the remainder from a $21 million bond issue the school board approved in December.

The bond issue will also be used at Trinity South for the HVAC system and renovations and pyrite-related repairs.

Howard said the elementary school HVAC systems are 25 years old.

“They’ve outlived their useful life,” said Howard.

The middle school pool HVAC, installed in 2004, also has exceeded its 10-year life expectancy.

Renovation also includes replacing lighting at the elementary schools.

Howard said bids for flooring repairs will go out next month.

Trinity South, built in 1993, has been affected by cracks and heaving floors due to expanding pyrite in the soil beneath it.

Superintendent Michael Lucas said last March the school district spent about $1.8 million from 1999 to 2009 on repairs.

Also Thursday, the school board accepted the resignation of Dr. Pamela Wolosky, director of special education, for retirement.
