WAYNESBURG – An engineering survey will begin soon at the Wisecarver Reservoir property near Waynesburg to see how three ballfields can be squeezed into the site to offer more recreation amenities in Greene County.

The county commissioners Thursday agreed to pay Mackin Engineering $10,800 to begin the study to see whether the proposal to build two softball fields and a baseball field would affect the dam and spillway.

County Chief Clerk Jeff Marshall said the surveying will be done “fairly quickly” with the hopes that formal plans can be announced by the fall. He said the survey will reveal the maximum amount of space needed to build the three fields without “interfering” with the 18.5-acre water reservoir.

The project has been in the works for the past two years after the county entered into a lease agreement with the reservoir’s owner, Southwestern Pennsylvania Water Authority, in June 2016. The 99-year lease is allowing the county to develop the 360-acre property into a park with various recreation opportunities.

One of those recreational needs was for ballfields, and Waynesburg Girls Softball Association approached the commissioners in October asking for help finding a site that could be developed. The fields are expected to be built on a cleared lot next to Water Dam Road near the reservoir’s spillway.

The commissioners are also hopeful they soon will receive a $305,000 grant from the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources to develop the site in Franklin Township.

“We’re keeping our fingers crossed,” Commissioner Blair Zimmerman said.

Zimmerman said they are also in the running for a $404,000 DCNR grant to extend the 5.2-mile Greene River Trail an additional 2.2 miles. The extension would run from its existing terminus at River Hill and Old Ferry roads near Crucible to the Jessop Boat Club property on Jacobs Ferry Road.
