A request by Peters Township Baseball Association to convert an unused athletic field to a pair of baseball fields has been granted approval.

On Dec. 21, township council voted unanimously to allow for the project, to be paid for in full by the association, to proceed at Venetia Park. The new fields will be used by players ages 5 to 8 in T-ball and Pinto leagues.

Ryan Jeroski, assistant township manager, said the association has been working with parks and recreation director Michele Harmel to identify potential new fields after losing access to one at Pleasant Valley Elementary School that was converted to synthetic turf.

“They’ve identified this grassy field that was previously used by the Peters Township Soccer Association at Venetia Park as an ideal location,” Jeroski told council, explaining the venue for soccer games has moved to newer synthetic-turf fields at Peterswood Park.

Regarding the association’s initiative, “the project would have to be designed to the township standard and would have to be built through the township’s bidding process,” he said.

In November, the township’s parks and recreation board voted to recommend council’s approval of the project.

“Once the bids are received for the project, reviewed by us and a decision is made to proceed, we will pay the township in advance of you entering into a contract,” Mark Williams, baseball association president, wrote to township manager Paul Lauer. “If the project ends up exceeding our available budget, we may have to delay or cancel it, but that is a risk we are willing to take.”

According to Harmel, a cost estimate for the project’s design has been provided by Mackin Engineers and Consultants, a frequent partner with the township. The project would not affect improvements pertaining to the federal Americans With Disabilities Act scheduled for implementation in 2021 at Venetia Park.
