The fish fry at Centerville American Legion is no frills. You get a beer-battered fish sandwich with your choice of deep-fried vice: fresh-cut fries, onion rings or mozzarella sticks.
As much as I hate to admit it, I would take beer-battered over hand-breaded any day. And that mountain of onion rings just hits the spot a lot more than the finest cup of cole slaw.
Perhaps it’s the inner Paula Deen in me, but there is something so comforting and downright delicious about deep-fried foods. Who knew fat could taste so good? (OK, everyone knew.)
The best part about the meal is that it came with a small cup of dill pickle chips. I’ve never had a fish sandwich with pickles before, but sweet baby Jebediah am I glad that I finally saw the light. Slap some pickles and tartar sauce on that fish, and you’re ready to drift into a blissful food coma.
If you’d rather forego the fish, the Legion has other options including chicken tenders, sandwiches and wings, jumbo shrimp, hamburgers and crab cakes.
The volunteers at the Legion (1101 Old National Pike) are friendly and offer to bring your meal to you if you head downstairs for a more adult beverage.
April 3 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. will be your last chance to try the Legion’s fried delicacies. Get some fish while they’re hot (and fried)!
