Nicolas A. Ferrera, grandson of Anthony and Madeline Ferrera of McDonald, has received an Air Force Reserve Officers’ Training Corps scholarship to attend the University of Louisville in Kentucky. Scholarships are awarded on a merit system in areas such as academic achievement, extracurricular activities, physical fitness, specific performance or accomplishment, leadership abilities and personal interviews. The scholarship includes tuition and fees, an annual allowance of $600 for textbooks and a monthly stipend for up to 10 months of each school year for contracted cadets. Upon graduation from college and completion of the ROTC program, the student cadet receives a bachelor’s degree and a commission as a second lieutenant in the Air Force.
Air Force Airman 1st Class James R. Gillis graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas. Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate degree in applied science through the Community College of the Air Force. Gillis is a 2010 graduate of Bethlehem-Center High School, and his parents are Beverly and James Gillis of Brownsville.
