1952 – Bob Mathias wins his second Olympic decathlon in Helsinki.

1956 – Roberto Clemente becomes the only major leaguer to hit a walk-off inside-the-park grand slam as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Chicago Cubs 9-8 at Forbes Field.

1974 – Dock Ellis pitches 8 2/3 shutout innings, and Willie Stargell triples and drives in a run, as the Pittsburgh Pirates defeat the Montreal Expos 3-0 at Jarry Park. The game time is only one hour and 47 minutes.

1986 – The Pittsburgh Steelers trim their roster by releasing two players, including former Waynesburg College nose tackle Pete Long.

2011 – The 19-inning, six-hour and 39-minute game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Atlanta Braves at Turner Field ends in a 4-3 Atlanta victory when Jerry Meals makes one of the worst calls in baseball history. The home plate umpire rules that Michael McKenry had missed Julio Lugo, although it was evident to everyone in the ballpark that the baserunner was tagged out three feet in front of the plate.

HOLE-IN-ONE

Jacques Rhodes had a hole-in-one July 21 at Washington Country Club. Rhodes aced the 148-yarde No. 5 hole by using a 9-iron. Rhodes' playing partners were David Witt and John Pavlik.
